The Coast Tsimshian Enterprises (CTE) Bursary Program is administered through the Lax Kw’alaams Business Development and Metlakatla Development Corporation, which provides money for Lax Kw’alaams and Metlakatla members to continue their post-secondary studies. Eight CTE Bursaries of $500.00 each are available to Lax Kw’alaams and Metlakatla members pursuing post secondary education. Click here for more information and the application.
The Metlakatla Wilderness Trail was officially re-opened on May 25 with a ceremony in Metlakatla. Click here to see the full press release. In order to accommodate visitors who may wish to experience the trail but have no access to the area, the Metlakatla Governing Council is providing a twice-weekly charter that will be limited to the first 20 hikers. The charters will leave the Metlakatla Ferry Dock below the Crest Hotel on Tuesdays and Saturdays at 9:30 a.m. and return from the dock in Metlakatla at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday and 4:30 p.m. on Saturday. Those on the charter will be asked to sign in to ensure those on the trail can be tracked for safety purposes. Please note that anyone hiking the trail is asked to bring water, food and any necessary supplies as there is no opportunity to purchase food, drinks or supplies once in the community of Metlakatla. As well, given the rich cultural history of the area, hikers are asked to be respectful of the trail and beaches and not remove any materials. While the ceremony was held, we ask that hikers refrain from accessing the trail until June 6.
Metlakatla members: Please join us in celebrating the re-opening of the Metlakatla Wilderness Trail on Thursday, March 25. For members, there will be a charter leaving the Prince Rupert dock at 10:30 a.m. for a community event starting at 11:30 a.m. A charter will be returning at 2:15 p.m. in addition to the regular return trips to Prince Rupert at 3:45 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. The charter will be on a first-come, first-served basis. Look for more information on the Wilderness Trail in the coming weeks.
